Goals and tasks
The basic goal of the research data centres of the statistical offices of the Federation and the Länder is to improve the accessibility and usability of microdata of official statistics by setting up various ways of using the data. (A detailed presentation of the goals and tasks of the research data centres will be added shortly.)
Background and development
In the past few years, a lively discussion has been going on in Germany about the scientific community's access to microdata of official statistics. On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Commission for Improving the Informational Infrastructure between Science and Statistics (KVI) put forward a number of suggestions in 1999 for improving the interactions between the scientific community and statistical agencies. One of the central institutional recommendations of the Commission was for public data producers to establish research data centres as soon as possible.

- Research Data Centre of the Federal Employment Agency at the Institute for Employment Research
- Research Data Centre of the Statutory Pension Insurance Institutions
- German Microdata Lab (GML) – Service Centre at the Centre for Survey Research and Methodology (ZUMA)
- International Data Centre at the Institute for the Study of Labour (IZA)
